Great institutions are forged with good governance
The value of good governance rarely makes headlines, but it is the essential basis that makes everything Norfolk Community Foundation does possible. Throughout my career in public service and economic development, I have seen first-hand the power of strong leadership, collaboration, and strategic decision-making. Whether shaping policy, managing resources, or bringing together businesses, public bodies, and charities, my focus has always been on making a meaningful and lasting impact.
Over the past 20 years, the Foundation has grown into a truly insight-driven organisation. By combining robust data with the voices of our communities, it has sharpened its ability to identify local needs, direct funding where it will have the greatest impact, and act as a trusted partner to donors, businesses, and grassroots organisations alike. Good governance ensures that every decision it makes is thoughtful, every pound donated is used wisely, and every community it supports receives the help it truly needs.
But none of this happens by accident. I have been privileged to work alongside some stellar non-executives over the last 20 years. One of the pieces of advice that has stayed with me is ‘never leave your business acumen at the door’. People can have the misguided belief that the role of a charity trustee is a cosy diversion from the cut and thrust of their day job: believe me, it is not! For me, however, that is what makes trusteeship so exciting, challenging and immensely rewarding.

As Chair of Trustees, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a board that definitely brings their business acumen to the table! Our trustees are drawn from business, public service, and the voluntary sector, ensuring that together we can navigate the complexities of the modern world with confidence. A good board does more than oversee—it challenges, supports, and inspires. It understands the intricate partnerships needed to drive meaningful change and recognises that long-term success depends on collaboration, inclusion, and innovation.
It has been one of the greatest privileges of my career to serve on the Foundation’s board, working with dedicated colleagues who share a deep commitment to Norfolk’s future. I am proud to volunteer my time alongside 10 other trustees, all selected for the skills and experience they bring from their fields, and all committed to contributing to something truly transformative.
Good governance is what makes a charity not just effective but trusted. Trustees help make this happen by bringing their skills and experience to the table—helping to guide strategy, manage risks, and keep the organisation focused on what matters most. Being a trustee isn’t about sitting on the sidelines; it’s about getting involved, asking the right questions, and making sure a charity can thrive for years to come. If you have skills to share and want to make a real impact, becoming a trustee is an incredibly rewarding way to give back.
As we look ahead, the challenges facing our communities are growing ever more complex. But so too are the opportunities to make a difference. With good governance, strong leadership, and the power of collaboration, we can build a Norfolk where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
