Welcome to our second “State of Norfolk” bulletin, your go-to quarterly update from the Norfolk Community Foundation. Claire Cullens MBE once again provides unique insights into the local charity sector.
Key insights:
Working individuals needing help
One concerning trend is the growing number in-work individuals reaching out for support. Just outside the threshold for benefits, they are unable to meet rising costs – highlighting the increasing vulnerability of those we assume are financially secure.
Charities provide vital safety net
Community charities are stepping in to catch those falling through the cracks, going beyond immediate assistance to connect people to additional resources and services.
Restoring dignity to those in crisis
Norfolk charities are creating a sense of worth and dignity for people in crisis, with many sharing how they feel seen, valued, and cared for by these organisations—far removed from the impersonal nature of many formal systems.
Financial challenges for charities
Rising costs, from utilities to wages, have made their work more expensive to deliver, while donations have not kept pace. The recent increase in National Insurance for employers will further stretch the charitable sector, costing over £1 billion nationally.
Innovation and expanding partnerships to meet demand
Many funders are pausing grant-making due to overwhelming demand, leaving gaps in support at a critical time. We remain committed to stepping up in times of crisis, and have responded by expanding our network of over 130 local businesses and thousands of individuals and trusts to share skills, assets, and funding.
